"I work in an additive process ,an upbeat narrative on canvas that I find difficult to achieve in everyday life."
Martin Hough was born in Philadelphia in 1956.  He began his formal study in 1972 with his initial medium in clay.  Through the designing process of clay creations, it was inevitable that he would become intimate with more than one art form.  Having ready access to the N.Y.C. art scene, Hough was able to study many artist's work.  Early in his career, he began to concentrate on the two dimensional canvas.  Artists ranging from Turner to Cézanne, and from Dufy, Picasso, De kooning to Beckman, have heavily influenced Hough's academia.  "The basis of the expressive style of my work is to arouse curiosity and creativity by encouraging the individual to become an active participant with the piece."  In reviewing the many years of Hough's work a dominant style becomes evident.  His painting is a topical language all of it's own.

Martin's creative process expands over three decades with his initial medium in clay.  The influences in working with clay has given his paintings a unique prospective.  In reviewing his many years of painting, the rawness and earthy influences of the clay becomes evident.
